Annyeong! Here's another Kdrama series that I've watched during my quarantine period last April entitled, "Something In The Rain" (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food). It's a 2018 drama starred by Son Ye jin and Jung Hae-In.
Truth be told, I had moments of having second emotions for this especially after seeing the trailer. In fact, I wouldn't bother to watch this if it really wasn't for SYJ! 😅 Though as usual, some of my friends from the fandom urged me to watch and finish it ('cause I almost gave up after 2 episodes, I'm sorry 🙃) so I did. In conclusion, I find the story beautiful with its real-life events and it will really make you fall in love just like what they said on their promotional events 🖤 Intricate as it seems but there's a subtle reason why they put on an old girl-young guy relationship ;)
There might be negativity as you read along but keep in mind that these are purely my own thoughts (from a solid BinJin fan).
Mainly, the story explores the life of Yoon Jin-Ah (Son Ye jin), a career woman in her 30's who is acquainted with her childhood best friend's younger brother, Seo Jun-Hui (Jung Hae-In). They suddenly became a couple and decided to keep it in secret because of the societal taboos in their circle. As their relationship remain undisclosed, they faced struggles with their family, friendship and their jobs. Hence, those who date secretly make it more obvious.
At first, I got really bored with the story together with the corny deadpan tunes (sorry!🙈). Secondly, I didn't like JHI's character because I find him very clingy to SYJ to the extent that I'd skip some of their cheesy moments (once again, I'm very sorry!HAHA 🙈). However, the latter episodes got me hooked 'til the end. What an impressive plot. Is it because they got separated? NOPE! 😆 I may not be a fan of their 'ship but the time that they parted ways made my heart sank too 🥺 The 2 final episodes were heartbreaking narrating all of Jin-ah's struggles. The ending was consequently fine; they rekindled their relationship and I guess that's how it will be for them. Does it deserve a season 2? I don't think so. 😏 I believe the writer had left the story like that for us to give our own better endings of Jin-ah and Jun Hui in Jeju island.
Generally, the gist of the show is so down-to-earth in which everyone can relate in every aspect. The norms of the society were clearly depicted with the couple's intellectual differences besides their age gap.
In South Korean culture, it's a sibling treatment when an old girl frequently buys food for a younger man.
Jin-ah has a strong personality and much focused with her work. But as the love bug bit her, she had done irrational decisions which taught her at the end. Then there's Jun Hui, the immature, easygoing man who also went all out for the chance to save their relationship. InJinatics would surely enjoy this series as both have many sweet, heart-fluttering couple scenes. Their actions are absolutely ideal relationship goals.
Jin-ah's family portrays that every parent wants what's best for their child---like having a successful man of prestige. They disapprove Jun Hui because of his family background in spite that they have acted as a parental figure to them. At some point, I was expecting Kim Myeon to accept Jun Hui in the end but wow, she really stayed firm with her perfectionist decisions.Does eomma really knows best?
Then there's the ultimate friendship between Jin-ah and Seo Gyeongson. Dating a friend's sibling sure has its effects to one's friendship no matter how long their bond took. Such arrangements can go unbalanced and the attention left divided making the other end of the line feel envious. I actually felt sad when it happened to these ladies yet come to think of it, that kind of situation can be awkward in reality.
one of my fav cuts and episode 🖤 plus another part where SYJ danced to 2NE1's "I'm The Best" is one for the books!Haha
And lastly, the workplace mentality---that one should often mingle with their colleagues especially with the superiors in order to climb the corporate ladder. Most scenes from the office are very accurate in real life like the possible harassments that occur during out of office hours and the power that higher officials exhibit when things don't go as they pleased. I'm pretty sure we all have that kind of experience for once in our job-lives.
I got to admire Yejin's wardrobe(and bags!!) throughout the series here. They are damn gorgeous casual inspos and are perfect to wear during the autumn or winter season 🖤
Overall, I gave it a 9/10 just for the reason that I don't like the set-up of the 2 leads. Yet, as I've stowed my own relationship preference aside while I watch this drama, I've become in awe with the life lessons it offered. 🖤 I love SYJ as an actress and I do adore her character being the eldest in a family of 4 plus a hardworking hopeless romantic which I find relatable to myself (but I have never fell for a young man! Haha). And as I grew to like this drama, my view to its OST has also changed--- "Something in The Rain" by Rachel Yamagata and "Stand By Your Man" by Carla Bruni are my favs.🖤 The whole SITR playlist is very mellow which suits to be played on a rainy day. Indeed, we all wanted to be loved; And sometimes, that feeling can make you go crazy or do sacrifice just to make things work. Though at the end of the day, we still have to make the right choices no matter what circumstances would take.
So yup, go prepare your hearts and catch them on Netflix! ;)
